(ARMENIAN WEEKLY, April 24) NEW YORK—The vow to “keep the promise” was in full effect on Sunday, April 23, as an impressive number gathered in Times Square to remember the 1.5 million martyrs and pay homage to their legacy, proving that the Armenian Genocide commemorations have only gained momentum since the Centennial.
The relevant and inspiring program, organized by the Knights and Daughters of Vartan since 1985, once again attracted thousands of supporters who waved the vibrant tricolor flags of Armenia and Artsakh in the heart of New York City, as the past was remembered and a renewed effort was made to strengthen the Armenian Diaspora and the homeland.
Steadfast supporters of the Armenian Genocide were once again in attendance to speak, particularly committed elected officials, including Congressman Frank Pallone (D-N.J.), who acknowledged the accomplishments of the Armenian Diaspora in championing genocide recognition around the world.
“Recognition will happen if all of you continue to march, write letters and take action,” said Pallone, founder of the Congressional Caucus of Armenian Issues, who recently introduced a new resolution for the U.S. Congress to recognize the genocide.
Pallone remarked that conflict in Armenia and Artsakh is ongoing, recognizing the war there last year and warned that although the genocide was over 100 years ago, violence is still being used against the Armenian people.
“Continue your efforts,” urged Pallone. “You being here today helps with genocide recognition and we as a people must speak out against genocide wherever it occurs.”
A fellow member of the Congressional Caucus on Armenian issues, Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney (D-N.Y.) promised to “confront a stubborn resistance.”
She said all nations have a responsibility to recognize the systemic extermination of the Armenians and that until the resolution is passed to recognize the Armenian Genocide in the U.S., “we will not stop.”
Appearing every year without fail, Senator Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), who is the current Senate Minority Leader, pledged to “stand with all of you in acknowledging the Armenian Genocide and nothing less.”
He praised the energy and collective spirit of Armenians a century after the massacres and hailed the production of the major motion picture, The Promise that “finally shines a light on this story and puts it in the mainstream for all to see.”
Honoring the memory of his late friend Sam Azadian, founder of the Armenian Genocide Commemoration in Times Square, Schumer said he attends the commemoration every year “because I believe it is our duty to speak out for the innocent victims of the Armenian Genocide.”
“The Armenian Genocide was the first Holocaust of the 20th century but not the last,” said Schumer. “These events are a stain on humanity and I stand with all of you today to remember the pain of the past.”
Scholar David Phillips, who worked towards reconciliation with Armenia and Turkey as former chair of the Turkish-Armenian Reconciliation Commission, said he always believed that “hard problems can be solved through hard dialogue.”
“But dialogue is impossible if one side wants to humiliate the other,” said Phillips, noting the efforts of Armenia’s President Serge Sargsyan towards reconciliation, while Turkey’s then Prime Minister Recep Erdogan reneged on their discussions.
“It takes two to talk,” said Phillips, who is currently the Director of the Peace-building and Rights Program at Columbia University’s Institute for the Study of Human Rights. “But Erdogan is not reconciliatory.”
He called then for Washington to investigate Erdogan for war crimes “to lay the groundwork for accountability.”
“Your work and presence here today is so important,” said Phillips. “For the Armenians today in Nagorno Karabagh, for the Yazidis in Iraq, and for all who suffer from crimes against humanity.”
Urging the next generation to take genocide recognition into their own hands, celebrity attorney Mark Geragos told the thousands of young people at the commemoration to “go outside the political process to create a movement to never forget.”
“If you as the next generation don’t keep the promise, we are doomed to repeat it.”
Geragos remarked that Turkey spends millions of dollars to “cover up and perpetuate a lie” and the following generations need to do their part to continue the fight for justice and remembrance.
Knights of Vartan Grand Commander Steven Kradjian and Daughters of Vartan Grand Matron Sona Manuelian recognized and honored Olympic wrestler Migran Arutyunyan and MMA champion Albert Ghazaryan, along with their coach Hayk Ghukasyan with special Knights of Vartan medals for their accomplishments in sports.
Dr. Rachel Goshgarian, Professor of History at Lafayette College and Armen McOmber Esq., New Jersey attorney, ably served as MCs for the program.
Remarks by sponsoring organizations were made by Stephen Mesrobian, Armenian National Committee of America Eastern Region (ANCA-ER); Talin Yacoubian, Armenian Assembly of America; Natalie Gabrielian, Armenian General Benevolent Union; Shahe Sanentz, ADL-Ramgavars; Souren Israelyan, Esq., Armenian Bar Association; Natalie Sarafian, Armenian Council of America; Shant Mardirossian, Near East Foundation; and Rev. Haig Kherlopian, Armenian Missionary Association of America and Armenian Evangelical Union of North America.
Archbishop Oshagan Choloyan, Prelate of the Eastern Prelacy of the Armenian Apostolic Church of America, gave the invocation and Very Rev. Fr. Vazken Karayan, pastor of Holy Cross Armenian Church, representing Archbishop Barsamian, Primate of the Diocese of the Armenian Church of America (Eastern), offered the benediction. Other clergy in attendance included Bishop Anoushavan Tanielian, Vicar General of the Eastern Prelacy of the Armenian Apostolic Church of America.
The winners of this year’s Knights of Vartan Essay Contest were announced at the program: Raffi Salbashian, 1st place, Stephan Havatian, 2nd place, and Samantha Khorozian, 3rd place.
The Hovnanian Armenian Day School students sang the national anthems of the United States and Armenia, as well as “God Bless America.”
The Armenian Radio Hour of New Jersey, led by director Vartan Abdo streamed the event live in video format worldwide, reaching more than 50,000 people, with the assistance of his dedicated volunteer staff.
The 102nd Armenian Genocide Commemoration in Times Square was organized by the Mid-Atlantic chapters of the Knights and Daughters of Vartan. Co-sponsors included the Armenian General Benevolent Union, the Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA), the Armenian Assembly of America, the ADL-Ramgavars, and the Armenian Council of America. Participating organizations included the Diocese of the Armenian Church of America (Eastern), Prelacy of the Armenian Church, Armenian Missionary Association of America, Armenian Presbyterian Church, the Armenian Evangelical Church, the Armenian Catholic Eparchy for U.S. and Canada and numerous Armenian youth organizations, including the Armenian Church Youth Organization of America, the Armenian Network of America, the Armenian Youth Federation, Homenetmen Scouts, Hamazkayin Cultural Association, Tekeyan Cultural Association, Noyan Tapan of Brooklyn, Armenian Students Association, Akh’tamar Dance Ensemble NJ, NY Armenian Old Age Home, AGBU Young Professionals, Armenian Youth Talent Association, tri-state Armenian college and university clubs, including the Cornell Armenian Student Organization, Princeton Armenian Society and Yale Armenian Network.

Ներկաները մէկ վայրկեան լռութեամբ յարգեցին անմեղ զոհերու յիշատակը։
Օրուան հանդիսավարի պաշտօնը ստանձնած էին Ռէյչըլ Կօշկարեան (Լաֆայէթ Համալսարան՝ պատմութեան ուսուղիչ) եւ Արմէն ՄըքՕմպըր (Նիւ Ճըրզիի շրջանէն փաստաբան):
Բացման աղօթքը կատարեց Ա.Մ.Ն. Արեւելեան Շրջանի Բարեջան Առաջնորդ Օշական Արքեպիսկոպոս Չոլոյեանը։

Փալոն յայտնեց թէ Օսմանեան կայսրութեան զանգուածային ջարդերէն հայերուն, ասորիներուն, յոյներուն ու հետապնդման ենթարկուած միւս փոքրամասնութիւններուն օգնելու համար Ուաշինկթըն պատմական մակարդակի օգնութիւն տրամադրած է, Քոնկրէսի հովանաւորութեամբ գործող մերձաւորարեւելեան կոմիտէն այն տարիներուն գումարներ հանգանակած է:
Փալոն անգամ մը եւս շեշտեց թէ ցեղասպանութիւնը ճանչնալով՝ Միացեալ Նահանգներու նախագահ Թրամփ, յարգանքի տուրք կը մատուցէ ոչ միայն զոհերու յիշատակին, այլեւ վերապրողներու հաստատակամութեանն ու հայկական արմատներ ունեցող բազմաթիւ ամերիկացիներուն, որոնք ցայսօր կը զօրացնեն երկիրը: Ան եզրակացուց թէ անցեալի իրադարձութիւններուն արձանագրութիւնները պատմութիւնը պարզապէս յիշելու եւ անցեալը պահելու համար չէ միայն, այլեւ ապագան գրելու համար, որպէսզի նոյնը չկրկնուի:
Չաք Շումըր յայտնեց թէ կասկածէ վեր է որ 1915-ի պատահածը քսաներրորդ դարու առաջին ցեղասպանութիւնն է: Ան նաեւ անդրադարձաւ, քանի մը օր առաջ շարժապատկերի սրահներուն մէջ ցուցադրուող «Տը Փրոմիս»(«Խոստումը») ժապաւէնին մասին եւ պատուիրեց անպայման դիտել եւ եզրակացնել թէ պատահածը որքան ահաւոր եւ անմարդկային էր:
Քարըլայն Մալոնի ընդգծեց, որ բոլոր պարագաներուն ալ արդարութիւնը պէտք է երեւան գայ: «Հայ ժողովուրդի իրաւունքն է արդարութեան հաստատումը, որ նոյնպէս բոլոր ժողովուրդներուն պատասխանատուութիւնն է», ըսաւ Մալոնի նշելով թէ, եթէ ճանաչում չկատարուի, դաժան պատմութիւնը ինքզինք պիտի կրկնէ:
Հայ Դատի յանձնախումբի Ա.Մ.Ն. արեւելեան շրջանի ներկայացուցիչ Սթիւ Մեսրոպեան բեմահարթակ բարձրանալով, յայտնեց թէ Ցեղասպանութեան նիւթը այնքա՛ն սուրբ է, որ կարելի չէ նոյնիսկ քաղաքական խաղաքարտի վերածել, աւելցնելով թէ անոնք, որոնք կ՛ընդունին Հայոց ցեղասպանութեան անհերքելի փաստը, այդ մէկը կ՛ընեն ոչ թէ զոհերուն լաւութիւն ընելու սիրոյն, այլ` իրենց սեփական վարկանիշը եւ բարոյական կերպարը վերականգնելու համար:
Ան տեղեկացուց թէ 1981-ին, Միացեալ Նահանգներու նախագահ` Ռոնալտ Ռիկըն, արդէն իսկ ճանչցած էր Հայոց ցեղասպանութիւնը, յատուկ նախագահական հռչակագիրով մը: Հայոց ցեղասպանութիւնը նաեւ ճանչցուած էր Միացեալ Նահանգներու Ներկայացուցիչներու տան կողմէ` 1975 եւ 1984 թուականներուն, արդարադատութեան նախարարութեան կողմէ 1951-ին` Միջազգային դատարան ուղարկուած պաշտօնական հաշուետուութեամբ, ինչպէս նաեւ` Միացեալ Նահանգներու 45 նահանգներու կողմէ:
Նախկին նախագահ Օպամա խուսափեցաւ իր նախընտրական խոստումները կատարելէ` նշելով թէ շարունակաբար նշած է 1915-ի ընթացքին կատարուածին վերաբերեալ իր սեփական տեսակէտը, եւ թէ այդ պատմութեան վերաբերեալ տեսակէտը չէ փոխուած, սակայն ան երբե՛ք չփորձեց ամերիկեան հանրութեան ներկայացնել, թէ յատկապէս ի՞նչ տեսակէտ ունէր անցեալին, որ եւ նոյնն է այսօր, եւ թէ` ի՞նչ տեղի ունեցած է 1915 թուականին:
Մինչդեռ 2008-ին, այդ ժամանակ տակաւին նախագահի թեկնածու Օպաման, փորձելով ստանալ հայկական համայնքին նիւթականն ու ձայները, ոչ մէկ տարակուսանք ունէր այս իրադարձութիւնները իրենց ճշգրիտ անունով կոչելու: Այդ ժամանակ ան ինքնավստահ յայտարարեց, թէ` «Հայոց ցեղասպանութիւնը ենթադրութիւն, սեփական կարծիք կամ տեսակէտ չէ՛», եւ խոստացաւ, որ նախագահ դառնալով պիտի ճանչնայ Հայոց ցեղասպանութիւնը…:
Մեսրոպեան, կոչ ուղղեց որ նախագահ Թրամփ միեւնոյն ձեւով չշարունակէ շարունակ «ծածկել» արդարութիւնը:
Նշենք թէ Ապրիլ 24-ին նախօրեակին, խումբ մը քոնկրէսականներ դիմած էին նաեւ իրենց գործընկերներուն՝ կոչ ընել Սպիտակ Տան՝ այս տարի շիտակ եւ ճշգրիտ կերպով կոչել 1915 թուականի իրադարձութիւնները:
Նախագահ Թրամփին ուղղուած նամակին մէջ անոնք նաեւ նշած են՝ ճանաչումը կը հաստատէ ամերիկեան վարչակազմի, այդ կարգին՝ կառավարութեան ու օրէնսդիր մարմնի կողմէ նախապէս եղած քայլերը:
Նախապէս, անոնք Հայոց ցեղասպանութեան ճանաչման հարցով դիմած էին Միացեալ Նահանգներու նոր պետական քարտուղարին՝ պարզելու համար նոր վարչակազմի դիրքորոշումը ամերկահայերու համար զգայուն այս հարցերու շուրջ:
«Միացեալ Նահանգներու շահերէն կը բխի երկու երկիրներու միջեւ խաղաղ ու կայուն յարաբերութիւններու ապահովումը», յայտնած էր պետական քարտուղար Ռէքս Թիլըրսըն՝ խոստանալով աջակցիլ պատմական դէպքերու լիակատար ընդունման ու Հայաստանի եւ Թուրքիոյ միջեւ բաց երկխօսութեան:
Թիլըրսըն նաեւ խոստացած էր աջակցիլ Հայաստանի ու Թուրքիոյ միջեւ դիւանագիտական ու տնտեսական յարաբերութիւններու կարգաւորման, ինչպէս նաեւ՝ մօտէն հետեւիլ Թուրքիոյ կրօնական փոքրամասնութիւններու, որոնց կարգին` հայերու իրաւունքներու, մշակութային ժառանգութեան պահպանման:
Տէյվիտ Ֆիլիփս, որ նախապէս անդամ եղած է թուրք-հայ հաշտեցման խորհուրդին, եւ այժմ Քոլումպիա համալսարանէն ներս, մարդկային իրաւունքներու համար գործող պատասխանատու, նշեց թէ նկատի ունենալով Թուրքիոյ նախագահ Էրտողանի գործելաձեւը կարելի չէ ճիշտ ընթացքով գործել:
Ան բռնօրէն քննադատեց Թուրքիոյ ներկայ ղեկավարին որդեգրած քաղաքականութիւնը, որ մօտիկ ապագային շատ աւելի հարցադրումներու դուռ պիտի բանայ: Ֆիլիփս նաեւ անդրադարձաւ Արցախի հիմնահարցին եւ ընդհանրապէս Միջին Արեւելքի ներկայ պայթուցիկ կացութեան մասին:
Խօսք առնողներու կարգին էր նաեւ փաստաբան Մարք Կիրակոս, որ կարելի չէ շարունակ խոստում դրժել եւ ցեղասպանութեան վերաբերեալ դարձ-դարձիկ արտայայտութիւններ ունենալ: «Բարոյական իրաւունք չունինք կատարելու այս չափազանց զգայուն եւ ցաւալի նիւթին մասին: Կարելի չէ պահուըտելով դասեր տալ մարդու իրաւունքներու, ժողովրդավարութեան եւ արդարութեան մասին, աշխարհի մէջ ոեւէ մէկուն», եզրակացուց Կիրակոս:
«Վարդանի Ասպետներ»ու անունով խօսք առին Սթիւըն Գրաճեան եւ Սոնա Մանուէլեան, որոնք յատուկ յիշատակի մետալներ յանձնեցին ողիմպիական մարզիկներ՝ Միհրան Յարութիւնեանի եւ Ալպէր Ղազարեանի:
Բազմաթիւ միութիւններ, հիմնարկներ եւ կազմակերպութիւններ կը հովանաւորէին այս հաւաքը, որուն գեղարուեստական յայտագրին ներկայ էին նաեւ «Յովնանեան» վարժարանի աշակերտներն ու Հ.Մ.Ը.Մ.-ի Նիւ Եորքի մասնաճիւղի աշակերտները:
La verdad, la justicia y el recuerdo prevalecen en Times Square Conmemoración en Nueva York del Genocidio Armenio
(DIARIO ARMENIA) La acción comunitaria para sostener con éxito el estreno del filme The Promise estaba en pleno apogeo el domingo 23 de abril, al mismo tiempo que una impresionante multitud se había dado cita en Times Square para recordar al millón y medio de mártires y rendir homenaje a su legado, lo que parece confirmar que las conmemoraciones del Genocidio Armenio no han dejado de crecer en importancia desde el Centenario.
El relevante e inspirador programa organizado por los Caballeros e Hijas de Vartan desde 1985, atrajo una vez más a miles de simpatizantes que agitando las banderas tricolores de Armenia y Artsaj en el corazón de Nueva York, donde, como en el pasado, recordaron el crimen sufrido por los armenios y renovaron el esfuerzo de una Diáspora que busca fortalecerse en el reclamo de justicia.
Muchos políticos estadounidenses apoyaron el evento con su presencia o a través de notas dirigidas a los organizadores. Entre ellos se destacó el congresista Frank Pallone, quien reconoció los logros de la Diáspora armenia en el impulso del reconocimiento del Genocidio en todo el mundo. “El reconocimiento sobrevendrá si todos ustedes continúan marchando, escribiendo cartas y actuando”, dijo Pallone, miembro del “Congressional Caucus of Armenian Issues”, grupo parlamentario que recientemente presentó un nuevo proyecto de resolución para que el Congreso de Estados Unidos reconozca oficialmente el Genocidio Armenio.
Pallone remarcó que el conflicto entre Armenia y Artsaj con Azerbaidján está en pleno curso, reconociendo que la guerra sigue vigente allí y advirtiendo que aunque el Genocidio sucedió hace más de cien años la violencia sigue siendo utilizada contra el pueblo armenio. “Continúen sus esfuerzos. Ustedes están hoy aquí ayudando al reconocimiento del Genocidio y nosotros tenemos reclamar contra ese crimen de lesa humanidad donde sea que este se produzca”.
Otra integrante de la comisión de apoyo antes nombrada, la congresista Carolyn Maloney prometió “enfrentarse a la obstinada resistencia negacionista de Ankara”. Ella aseguró que todos los países tienen la responsabilidad de reconocer el exterminio sistemático de los armenios y que hasta que ello tenga lugar también en Estados Unidos “no nos vamos a detener”. Como todos los años el senador demócrata Chuck Schumer también estuvo presente en esta edición y se comprometió “estar junto a todos en el reconocimiento del Genocidio”.
El parlamentario, líder de la minoría en la Cámara Alta, puso de manifiesto la energía y el espíritu colectivo de los armenios que un siglo después de las matanzas aun luchan por sus reivindicaciones. Por otra parte, elogió la producción de la película “The Promise”, sobre la que dijo: “Este filme se acerca de gran manera esta historia de dolor y lo hace masivamente para que todos la conozcan”.
A su vez, haciendo honor a la memoria de su difunto amigo Sam Azadian, iniciador de esta conmemoración en el Times Square, Schumer comentó que asiste a la reunión cada año porque cree que “es nuestro deber hablar por las víctimas inocentes del Genocidio armenio”.
“Este genocidio fue el primer holocausto del Siglo XX pero no el último”, agregó el congresista. “Estos acontecimientos son una mancha en la humanidad y hoy estoy junto a todos ustedes para recordar el dolor del pasado”.
Por su lado, el académico David Phillips, quien trabajó como expresidente de la Comisión de Reconciliación Turco-Armenia, dijo que siempre creyó que “los problemas más graves pueden resolverse a través del diálogo exhaustivo”.
Sin embargo, añadió que “el acercamiento es imposible si uno de los lados pretende humillar al otro”, señalando los esfuerzos del presidente de Armenia Serge Sarkissian hacia la mediación, en oposición al primer ministro de Turquía, Recep Erdogan, que renunció a seguir con las tratativas de acuerdo.
Phillips, quien actualmente es director del Programa de Consolidación de la Paz y Derechos en el Instituto para el Estudio de los Derechos Humanos de la Universidad de Columbia, agregó que “Erdogán no es reconciliador”, al tiempo que pidió que Washington investigue a éste por crímenes de guerra “para sentar las bases para la correspondiente rendición de cuentas”. Además finalizó insistiendo que “la presencia y el trabajo de todos aquí es tan importante. Para los armenios de hoy en Nagorno Karabagh, para los yazidis en Irak y para todos los que sufren de crímenes de lesa humanidad”.
También, e insistiendo a la próxima generación para que tome la labor del reconocimiento del Genocidio con sus propias manos, el conocido abogado Mark Guiragós alentó a los miles de jóvenes presentes en la conmemoración a comprometerse a actuar para que el genocidio jamás sea olvidado. “Si tanto nosotros como la próxima generación no cumplimos con esta premisa, estamos condenados a que el crimen sea repetido”. Geragos señaló que Turquía gasta millones de dólares para “encubrir y perpetuar una gran mentira” y que los más jóvenes deben hacer su parte para continuar la lucha por la justicia y el recuerdo.
Más tarde, las organizaciones presentes honraron al luchador olímpico Migran Arutyunyan, al campeón de boxeo Albert Ghazaryan y a su entrenador Hayk Ghukasyan con medallas especiales de los Caballeros de Vartan por sus logros deportivos. A su vez, los estudiantes de la Hovnanian Armenian Day entonaron los himnos nacionales de Armenia y Estados Unidos. El evento se transmitió audiovisualmente por internet a través de un programa armenio de una radio local y llegó a decenas de miles de personas en todo el mundo.
