SYDNEY: The first ever Australian-produced film on the Armenian Genocide, Shahane Bekarian\u2019s \u201cChildren of a Genocide\u201d will Premiere at Event Cinemas in Top Ryde on Sunday 31st July 2016, 6pm. <\/p>\n

This 62-minute documentary, produced in association with the Armenian National Committee of Australia<\/a> (ANC Australia), is about the struggle of Armenian children who narrowly survived a genocide at the hands of the Ottoman Empire in 1915. Exiled from their homes and forced onto death marches into the Syrian desert of Deir el-Zor, more than 1.5 million perished.<\/p>\n

Sydney-based Bekarian uncovers archival interviews of 40 survivors who disclose their shocking stories. Driven by his grandfather\u2019s story, the filmmaker searches for identity amongst a melange of separate cultures. Having tracked down other survivors\u2019 grandchildren, 100 years after the genocide, they compare today\u2019s struggle to retain their ancient culture from assimilation and homogeny in the \u201clucky country\u201d of Australia.<\/p>\n

With the 101st Anniversary of the Armenian Genocide commemorations in Australia having a particular focus on Australian links to the Armenian Genocide, the film \u201cChildren of a Genocide\u201d will add to this awareness as it looks at eyewitness testimonies recorded in the 1980s to help understand the severity of the tragedy.<\/p>\n

Many descendants of these films play a part in telling their story and how they live their day-to-day lives remembering the pain and sufferings of their ancestors.<\/p>\n

Regarding the Premiere of the film, Bekarian said: \u201cI\u2019m very excited and proud to bring my film Children of a Genocide to the greater community.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe film intends to raise questions on how we\u2019re coping with cultural preservation in multicultural Australia and how we deal with the genocide 101 years on, on an interpersonal level and in our day-to-day lives.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added: \u201cI hope that, with the use of survivor archive footage, it preserves the cause of our forefathers, echoes the connection to the youth, and helps us unite as a singular community.\u201d<\/p>\n

ANC Australia Executive Administrator, Arin Markarian said: \u201cWe have seen the hard work and dedication that Mr. Bekarian has put into showing the true eye-witness accounts of those Armenian Genocide from survivors who moved to Australia, and to highlight the feelings of their descendants.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added: \u201cThis project has been ongoing for some time, and I know that particularly our local Armenian community will feel a strong connection to the content of the film and I would encourage everyone to support it.\u201d<\/p>\n
