{"id":24661,"date":"2026-11-06T16:46:03","date_gmt":"2026-11-06T16:46:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ancnews.info\/?p=24661"},"modified":"2026-11-06T16:46:04","modified_gmt":"2026-11-06T16:46:04","slug":"anc-international-calls-on-un-security-council-to-reject-feridun-sinirlioglu-as-secretary-general","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ancnews.info\/?p=24661","title":{"rendered":"ANC-International Calls on UN Security Council to Reject Feridun Sinirlio\u011flu as Secretary-General"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Statement by the Armenian National Committee \u2013 International<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The Armenian National Committee \u2013 International (ANC-International) calls on the members of the UN Security Council, and the governments of all UN member states, <strong>to reject T\u00fcrkiye\u2019s nomination of Feridun Sinirlio\u011flu for the post of UN Secretary-General.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The Secretary-General must be an impartial guardian of the UN Charter and the world\u2019s first voice against mass atrocities. Mr.&nbsp;Sinirlio\u011flu\u2019s record shows the opposite: decades spent advancing one government\u2019s agenda, <strong>including the denial of the Armenian Genocide in the UN\u2019s own official record.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">On 16 October 2020, as T\u00fcrkiye\u2019s Permanent Representative to the UN, Mr.&nbsp;Sinirlio\u011flu signed a letter to the Secretary-General (<a href=\"https:\/\/digitallibrary.un.org\/record\/3888445\/files\/A_75_525--S_2020_1024-EN.pdf\">UN document A\/75\/525\u2013S\/2020\/1024<\/a>). In it he <strong>asserted that the events of 1915 were not genocide<\/strong> and remain a matter of \u201clegitimate debate.\u201d He sent that letter three weeks into Azerbaijan\u2019s assault on Artsakh. In it he <strong>dismissed reports of foreign fighters in the conflict zone as \u201cbaseless,\u201d<\/strong> although Russia, France and the United States had confirmed that Syrian mercenaries were being deployed there. The letter also <strong>accused Armenian diaspora organisations, without evidence,<\/strong> of moving fighters to the front \u201cunder the cover of charity.\u201d Within three years, more than 100,000 Armenians were forced from Artsakh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">This was not an isolated act. As Undersecretary of T\u00fcrkiye\u2019s Foreign Ministry in 2010, Mr.&nbsp;Sinirlio\u011flu <strong>travelled to Washington to lobby against a U.S. House resolution affirming the Armenian Genocide.<\/strong> His ministry then accused Armenia\u2019s Constitutional Court of imposing \u201cpreconditions\u201d on the Armenia\u2013Turkey protocols, a pretext Ankara used to stall their ratification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">In July 2026, as OSCE Secretary General, Mr.&nbsp;Sinirlio\u011flu spoke to callers he believed to be Armenia\u2019s Prime Minister. He told them he would <strong>\u201clook into\u201d how the OSCE could support the removal of the Catholicos of All Armenians.<\/strong> Four international human rights and religious-freedom organisations condemned these remarks as irreconcilable with his office and called on him to retract them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Nor can Mr.&nbsp;Sinirlio\u011flu offer <strong>the independence the office demands.<\/strong> He is widely described as a close confidant of President Erdo\u011fan, who nominated him personally. Article 100 of the UN Charter forbids the Secretary-General from seeking or receiving instructions from any government. Yet in nearly every crisis the next Secretary-General must manage, his own government is a party or a protagonist: Cyprus, the South Caucasus, Syria and Ukraine. T\u00fcrkiye continues to occupy over a third of Cyprus, a UN member state, in defiance of Security Council resolutions. Meanwhile, the Secretary-General\u2019s good offices lead the search for a settlement there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The Secretary-General speaks for the world on the Genocide Convention. <strong>The UN cannot be led by a man who denied a genocide on UN letterhead<\/strong> and has spent his career working to silence the truth about the first genocide of the 20th century. Entrusting him with the UN\u2019s highest office would send a devastating message to survivors of mass atrocities everywhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>We therefore call on:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Security Council members<\/strong>, and especially the permanent members, to withhold support from Mr.\u00a0Sinirlio\u011flu\u2019s candidacy in all straw polls and in the Council\u2019s formal recommendation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>All UN member states<\/strong> to insist that the next Secretary-General has a record of unambiguous commitment to genocide prevention and to the independence required by Article 100.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Mr.\u00a0Sinirlio\u011flu<\/strong> to state publicly whether he still stands by the denial of the Armenian Genocide in his 2020 letter, and whether he has retracted his offer to assist in removing the head of the Armenian Apostolic Church.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">We stand with the governments, communities and civil society organisations that have raised concerns about this candidacy.
