State Assemblymember Adrin Nazarian helmed the suuccessfull passage in the California State Assembly<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

\u201cI am grateful for my colleagues for joining with me to fight for justice for the 1.5 million Armenian souls who perished in the Genocide,\u201d stated Assemblymember Adrin Nazarian. \u201cIf Turkey continues to fund Armenian Genocide deniers they must be financially punished.\u201d<\/p>\n

AB 1597 prohibits the boards of the California Public Retirement System (CalPERS) and California State Teachers\u2019 Retirement System (CalSTRS) from making additional or new investments, or renewing existing investments issued, owned, controlled, or managed by the government of Turkey.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor the past few years, the ANCA-Western Region has been diligently working closely with the Armenian Youth Federation and Assemblymember Adrin Nazarian on advancing the Divest Turkey initiative step by step, and we are gratified that AB1597 cleared one more hurdle today,\u201d said Nora Hovsepian, Esq., the chair of the Armenian National Committee of America-Western Region.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe look forward to seeing California\u2019s investment policy come into alignment with its unequivocal policy calling for justice for the Armenian Genocide, and we will continue to do all we can to achieve this goal,\u201d added Hovsepian.<\/p>\n

The boards shall liquidate investments only upon action taken by the federal government. More specifically, CalPERS and CalSTRS must liquidate any of the investments described above within six months of the passage of federal sanctions on Turkey.<\/p>\n

This bill also requires the boards of CalPERS and CalSTRS to submit reports to the Legislature and the Governor, within a year of when the federal government issues sanctions against Turkey. The report will detail a list of investments that they have already liquidated and a list of investments that potentially can be liquidated.<\/p>\n

AB 1597 will now be debated and voted on by the Senate Judiciary Committee, on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
