SYDNEY: The Armenian National Committee of Australia<\/a> (ANC\u2013AU) has criticised The Australian<\/em> newspaper for glorifying the deeply offensive phrase, \u201cYoung Turks\u201d on their front page on 23rd October, 2017.<\/p>\n

The Australian<\/em> used the phrase as a catchy headline to describe the victorious young political leaders making news last month, including New Zealand\u2019s Jacinta Ardern and Austria\u2019s Sebastian Kurz.<\/p>\n

The origins of the phrase \u201cYoung Turks\u201d stem from the Ottoman Empire\u2019s nationalistic movement, which entailed a Pan Turkic vision that involved the elimination of the Empire\u2019s thriving Christian minorities – the Armenian, Greek and Assyrian populations.<\/p>\n

The \u201cYoung Turks\u201d, who committed the Armenian Genocide in 1915, are compared by scholars to the Nazis of their time. ANC-AU was livid that the “Hitlers of the Armenian Genocide” were being used to describe leaders making democratic waves in politics today.<\/p>\n

ANC-AU Managing Director, Vache Kahramanian commented: \u201cImagine that headline said \u2018Nazis\u2019 in an effort to describe a pioneering new political force in 2017. Would that even be considered? Rightfully not! And nor should the phrase ‘Young Turks’, after a group responsible for the brutal genocide of over 1.5 million Armenians, Greeks and Assyrians.\u201d<\/p>\n

In his letter to The Australian<\/em>, Kahramanian outlines how in the past, the newspaper has played a valiant role in recognising and reporting on the Armenian Genocide. It is therefore saddening that The Australian<\/em> would liken the spectacular rise of Ardern and Kurz to the group responsible for the project of eliminating these minority populations.<\/p>\n

Kahramanian added: \u201cWe ask only that The Australian<\/em> not dignify historical revisionism, and retract its use of a term that causes offence to the many descendants of the survivors of the genocide who call Australia home.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
