Ottawa \u2013 Today, the Armenian National Committee of Canada<\/a> (ANCC) joins Armenians across the world in celebrating the 26th Anniversary of Armenia\u2019s independence.<\/p>\n

\u201cIndependence Day is an opportunity for both reflection and renewed enthusiasm. As we reflect on the past, we look forward to building on our achievements and strengthening our commitment to Armenia\u2019s security, prosperity and development\u201d said Shahen Mirakian, president of the ANCC.<\/p>\n

Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, the Republic of Armenia declared it\u2019s independence on September 21st, 1991. However, such brave acts came at a heavy cost, as Azerbaijan launched a full-out war against the young republic, causing thousands of casualties and a considerable amount of economic and humanitarian destruction.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs Azerbaijan\u2019s continued aggression, increased militarization and warmongering and Turkey\u2019s illegal blockade of Armenia continue to destabilize the South Caucasian region, the international community and particularly Canada should act in favour of a peaceful conflict resolution and establish more comprehensive working relations with the Republic of Armenia\u201d added Mirakian.<\/p>\n

Despite all the hardships that are prevalent today, for the past 26 years, Armenia has nonetheless stood as a beacon of democracy, freedom and development. While breaking new grounds economically, socially and politically, it has continued to maintain a world-renowned reputation in advancing its commitment to peace, stability and prosperity in the South Caucasian region. As an emerging hub of foreign investments and other economic incentives, Armenia\u2019s perpetual development in various emerging fields has placed it at the forefronts of international attention.<\/p>\n

\u201cSince 1992, Canada and Armenia have established and maintained strong and healthy bilateral relations, marked by growing economic and political ties, strong people-to-people relations and reciprocal visits by governmental and parliamentary representatives. However, as the two countries continue their work in expanding the political and economic ties, it is highly imperative for Canada to have a permanent diplomatic mission in Yerevan, that will be fully accredited in representing Canada\u2019s interests in Armenia\u201d concluded Mirakian.<\/p>\n

On this festive occasion, the Armenian National Committee of Canada wishes all Armenians a happy Independence Day.<\/p>\n
