From June 10 to 12, 2017, Hisyar Ozsoy, vice co-chair of the People\u2019s Democratic Party of Turkey (HDP) and the party\u2019s foreign affairs critic discussed the current political situation in Turkey and the ongoing persecution of minorities at a series of community events in Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa. The events were jointly organized by the Canadian Kurdish Federation (CKF) and the Armenian National Committee of Canada<\/a> (ANCC).<\/p>\n

During his speech in Montreal, Mr. Ozsoy said \u201cTimes are difficult and challenging but we will survive despite all the hardships imposed by the Erdogan regime\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201c5000 members of my party are in prison today, and I will get arrested when I get back to Turkey as well. However, I refuse to hide in another country. I need to be there with my people. I still have wok to do\u201d concluded Ozsoy.<\/p>\n

At each event, Mr. Ozsoy spoke of the aftermath of the constitutional referendum and the ongoing uncertainty and concern regarding the rights and freedoms of the minorities living in Turkey today. He specifically stressed the importance of raising international awareness and ensuring that western powers categorically condemn Turkish President Recep Tayipp Erdogan\u2019s misconducts and actively engage in empowering civil society in Turkey.<\/p>\n

On Monday, June 12, Mr. Ozsoy, met with Canadian Members of Parliament and various officials representing the Government of Canada at special meetings organized by Mr. Tom Kmiec, member of parliament for Calgary Shepard and chair of the Kurdish-Canadian Parliamentary Friendship Group. During the meetings, Mr. Ozsoy, accompanied by Mr. Abraham Niziblian, executive member of the ANCC and Mr. Gurkan Ormangoren, co-chair of CKF, discussed Canada\u2019s responsibility to protect human rights of minorities in Turkey.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe highly appreciate and commend the unwavering commitment displayed by Mr. Ozsoy and his party in promoting tolerance and human rights for ethnic minorities in Turkey\u201d said Mr. Raffi Donabedian, chair of the ANCC. \u201cOur expectation is for our government and for the entire international community to become more engaged and actively pursue efforts to promote human rights and justice in Turkey, especially at a time when the current regime is descending into absolute autocracy\u201d added Donabedian.<\/p>\n

Commenting on the events, Mr. Gurkan Ormangoran, co-chair of the Canadian Kurdish Federation noted \u201cThe mistreatment of the Kurdish minority and all other minorities in Turkey today has reached alarming levels and therefore, Mr. Ozsoy\u2019s appeal in Canada and elsewhere is more relevant than ever\u201d<\/p>\n

Hisyar Ozsoy is a ranking member of the HDP and a long-time activist for human rights issues in Turkey and around the world. Ozsoy was first elected as an MP from his hometown Bingol on June 7th, 2015. He was re-elected on November 1st, 2015. Ozsoy is currently serving as the vice co-chair of the HDP, in charge of foreign affairs and a member of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (GNAT). He is also a member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE PA) and a substitute member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE).<\/p>\n

Lors de son discours \u00e0 Montr\u00e9al, M. Ozsoy a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 : \u201cLes temps sont tr\u00e8s difficiles pour les minorit\u00e9s en Turquie, mais malgr\u00e9 toutes les difficult\u00e9s impos\u00e9es par le r\u00e9gime d\u2019Erdogan nous survivrons\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201c 5000 membres de mon parti sont en prison aujourd\u2019hui, et je serai probablement arr\u00eat\u00e9 quand je retournerais en Turquie. Cependant, je refuse de me cacher dans un autre pays. Je dois \u00eatre l\u00e0 avec mon peuple. J\u2019ai encore du travail \u00e0 faire\u201d a conclu M. Ozsoy.<\/p>\n

Au cours de chacun des \u00e9v\u00e9nements communautaires \u00e0 Montr\u00e9al et Toronto, M. Ozsoy a parl\u00e9 des cons\u00e9quences du r\u00e9f\u00e9rendum constitutionnel et de l\u2019incertitude et des pr\u00e9occupations persistantes concernant les droits et libert\u00e9s des minorit\u00e9s vivant aujourd\u2019hui en Turquie. Il a sp\u00e9cifiquement soulign\u00e9 l\u2019importance de sensibiliser la communaut\u00e9 internationale et de veiller \u00e0 ce que les puissances occidentales condamnent cat\u00e9goriquement les inconduites du pr\u00e9sident turc Recep Tayipp Erdogan et s\u2019engagent activement \u00e0 renforcer la soci\u00e9t\u00e9 civile en Turquie.<\/p>\n

Ozsoy, a rencontr\u00e9 des d\u00e9put\u00e9s canadiens et divers fonctionnaires repr\u00e9sentant le gouvernement du Canada lors de r\u00e9unions sp\u00e9ciales organis\u00e9es par M. En commentant la visite du parlementaire, M. Gurkan Ormangoran, copr\u00e9sident de la F\u00e9d\u00e9ration canadienne d\u00e9mocratique kurde, a not\u00e9 : \u201cLe mauvais traitement de la minorit\u00e9 kurde et de toutes les autres minorit\u00e9s en Turquie a atteint aujourd\u2019hui des niveaux alarmants et, par cons\u00e9quent, les t\u00e9moignages de M. Ozsoy au Canada et partout ailleurs sont plus pertinents que jamais \u201d.<\/p>\n

Hisyar Ozsoy est un membre pro\u00e9minent du Parti populaire d\u00e9mocratique de Turquie et militant de longue date pour les droits de l\u2019homme en Turquie et dans le monde entier. Ozsoy a \u00e9t\u00e9 \u00e9lu d\u00e9put\u00e9 de sa ville natale de Bingol le 7 juin 2015. Il a \u00e9t\u00e9 r\u00e9\u00e9lu le 1er novembre 2015.
