{"id":11849,"date":"2017-04-25T13:54:04","date_gmt":"2017-04-25T13:54:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ancnews.info\/?p=11849"},"modified":"2017-04-25T13:54:04","modified_gmt":"2017-04-25T13:54:04","slug":"federal-cross-bench-powers-call-for-australian-recognition-of-armenian-genocide","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ancnews.info\/?p=11849","title":{"rendered":"Federal cross-bench powers call for Australian recognition of Armenian Genocide"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">SYDNEY: In statements released to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/ancaustralia\/\">Armenian National Committee of Australia<\/a> (ANC-AU) on the occasion of the 102nd anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, The Australian Greens and Senator Nick Xenophon have issued powerful calls on the Australian federal <!--more Continue reading \/ \u0531\u0574\u0562\u0578\u0572\u057b\u0568 \u2192--> government to recognise the Armenian Genocide.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Greens and the Nick Xenophon Team (NXT) are powerful cross-bench players in Federal Parliament, and these statements are expected to attract the attention of many in Canberra.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Greens&#8217; Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Senator Scott Ludlam said in a statement read out at the National Armenian Genocide Commemoration Evening in Sydney: &#8220;When the term \u2018genocide\u2019 was first coined to describe atrocities on such scale, the deaths of Armenians at the hands of the Ottoman Empire were cited as a defining example, yet to this day the Armenian Genocide is not recognised by parliaments across the world.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;State parliaments in Australia have recognised it, it\u2019s high time our Commonwealth parliament did too. Furthermore, we should be calling on the Turkish government to do the same.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Ludlam added: &#8220;ANZAC prisoners of war bore witness to some these vicious acts, we owe it to them to challenge any attempts to distort or outright deny the truth of the Armenian Genocide.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Senator Xenophon&#8217;s statement read: &#8220;To do this, Australia needs to stand up \u2013 stand up to genocide, and stand up and join those who have already recognised this brutality.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;We\u2019ve seen Canada stand up again this year, reaffirming their commitment to Armenian genocide recognition.
