She is survived by her two sons, three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. <!--more Continue reading \/ \u0531\u0574\u0562\u0578\u0572\u057b\u0568 \u2192--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Knar Bohdjelian-Yemenedjian was born in Gesaria (current day Kayseri, Turkey), in 1909. In 1915, during the Ottoman Turkish government\u2019s genocidal campaign against the Armenian population of the empire, she, along with her family found herself in the deportation marches that culminated in the systematic annihilation of 1.5 million Armenians. Like many Armenians at the time, she was forced to assume an Islamic identity in order to survive. After the genocide, she settled in Egypt, reclaiming her Armenian identity and forming a family that eventually settled in Montreal, Canada in 1971.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Armenian Genocide survivors, living examples of resilience, rebirth and fortitude, found themselves in a world that stood passive as the perpetrator denied its past and intentionally misconstrued history with impunity. Despite the fact that they had no sense of closure with their past, they remained hopeful and optimistic, becoming the greatest sources of influence for all the generations that followed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Although Turkey continues to deny the Armenian Genocide today, Knar Bohdjelian-Yemenedjian and many survivors that chose Canada as their new home were fortunate enough to have lived in a country, where the pain that was inflicted upon them and millions of other innocent Armenians was courageously recognized as a genocide by the Canadian Senate in 2002, the House of Commons in 2004 and the Government in 2006.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Furthermore, Mrs. Bohdjelian-Yemenedjian lived long enough to see the Canadian House of Commons, on the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, unanimously pass Motion 587, declaring the month of April as Genocide Remembrance Condemnation and Prevention Month.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWe strongly believe that it is only through our concerted efforts as Canadians, that we can strengthen our promise to fight against injustice and bolster our commitment to uphold the truth and prevent future violations of human rights\u201d said Shahen Mirakian, President of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/ArmenianNationalCommitteeofCanada\/\">Armenian National Committee of Canada<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cAs we witness the passing of an entire generation that did not see justice being served throughout their lifetime, we stand ever resolute in our struggle against denial and impunity and restate our steadfast commitment in our pursuit for justice\u201d added Mirakian.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As countries, such as Canada stand up against injustice and take a principled stance on issues of human rights, we rest assured that the legacy of Knar Bohdjelian-Yemenedjian and others will be upheld, and history will never be forgotten.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The ANCC mourns the passing of Knar Bohdjelian-Yemenedjian and expresses its deepest condolences to the family of the deceased.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">******<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The ANCC is the largest and the most influential Canadian-Armenian grassroots human rights organization. An estimated 1.5 million people were killed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Yemenidjian\u2019s niece, Nazan Artinian, says that she learned much of what she knows about the genocide from her aunt Knar, because other family members were unable to discuss the atrocities.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Artinian says her aunt and mother survived initially only because Yemenidjian\u2019s father (Artinian\u2019s grandfather) was warned by a Turkish friend that \u201call the Armenians are going to be killed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The friend told him, according to Artinian, \u201cIf you want to live, leave your house, take your family and go to this farm and hide yourself there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Artinian says the family lived in the barn, sleeping amongst the stench of sheep and cows. She says they had little food and were sickened with Typhoid fever.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Eventually, the family left the farm but were forced to convert to Islam and take on Turkish names in order to survive, according to Artinian. \u201cA great aunt said,&#8221; she adds, &#8220;it\u2019s better to change your religion and live longer than to \u2026 remain Christians and finally die.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The family fled to Alexandria, Egypt in 1928. During the Nasser era, the family again fled to safer lands. Yemenidjian ended up in Canada in 1971.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Artinian says her aunt always encouraged the younger generation to speak Armenian &#8212; not Arabic or Turkish &#8212; because it was a language the Turks had denied them.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">She says she\u2019ll remember her aunt as someone who always had a book or newspaper in her hand because the Turks had deprived her of a formal education.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cMy aunt used to say \u2018I always like to read now because I always wished to go to school and I couldn\u2019t all my life,\u2019\u201d Artinian says.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">in 2015. at age 106, Yemenidjian was among just a handful of verified Armenian-Canadian survivors who attended a special ceremony on Parliament hill marking 100 years since the genocide began.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">There are other anecdotal reports of Armenian-Canadian survivors from the genocide, but historians have not fully verified those cases through the appropriate record checks.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Yemenidjian was determined to be the last survivor verified through the Armenian National Committee of Canada.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Canada\u2019s was among the first countries to recognize the genocide, in 2004.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Turkey, a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, has refused to take that step. Cette arm\u00e9e remplace celle du vieil Empire ottoman, qui apr\u00e8s 600 ans d&#8217;existence, s&#8217;effondre lors de la Premi\u00e8re Guerre mondiale.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Nous l&#8217;avons rencontr\u00e9e le mois dernier dans le CHSLD de Montr\u00e9al o\u00f9 elle vivait depuis quelques ann\u00e9es. La vieille dame venait alors d&#8217;\u00eatre identifi\u00e9e par le Comit\u00e9 national arm\u00e9nien du Canada comme \u00e9tant la derni\u00e8re survivante du g\u00e9nocide encore en vie au pays. En raison de son \u00e2ge tr\u00e8s avanc\u00e9, elle n&#8217;\u00e9tait plus apte \u00e0 nous raconter elle-m\u00eame son histoire.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">C&#8217;est donc son fils, Hovsep Yemenidjian, qui nous a parl\u00e9 de ce qui s&#8217;est pass\u00e9 entre avril 1915 et juillet 1916.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>Son p\u00e8re, donc mon grand-p\u00e8re, \u00e9tait soldat dans l&#8217;arm\u00e9e. Et c&#8217;est l&#8217;un de ses amis, un militaire turc, qui a cach\u00e9 toute la famille dans une ferme quand les massacres ont commenc\u00e9. Ils sont rest\u00e9s quelques mois dans une \u00e9table avec les animaux \u00e0 dormir par terre.<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Hovsep Yemenidjian<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Hovsep raconte que ces quelques mois ont \u00e9t\u00e9 tr\u00e8s difficiles pour sa m\u00e8re, qui pleurait pour avoir quelque chose \u00e0 manger, ne serait-ce qu&#8217;un morceau de pain moisi.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Tandis que les soldats arm\u00e9niens qui servaient dans l&#8217;arm\u00e9e turque commen\u00e7aient \u00e0 dispara\u00eetre, souvent fusill\u00e9s, le p\u00e8re de Knar a attrap\u00e9 la fi\u00e8vre typho\u00efde. C&#8217;est en quelque sorte ce qui allait le sauver.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>Dans l&#8217;arm\u00e9e, ils ont dit : &#8220;Il va mourir de toute fa\u00e7on!&#8221; et ils l&#8217;ont renvoy\u00e9. Il a rejoint sa femme et ses enfants, mais toute la famille a alors attrap\u00e9 la typho\u00efde. C&#8217;\u00e9tait une maladie souvent mortelle, mais ils ont surv\u00e9cu.<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Hovsep Yemenidjian<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Quand la jeune Knar et sa famille sont retourn\u00e9es \u00e0 C\u00e9sar\u00e9e de Cappadoce, ils ont d\u00e9couvert leur maison br\u00fbl\u00e9e, comme celles de leurs voisins arm\u00e9niens, qui avaient \u00e9t\u00e9 pour la plupart extermin\u00e9s. Ils ont reconstruit la maison et ont v\u00e9cu sous de fausses identit\u00e9s pendant 10 ans.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>[Un ami militaire turc leur a permis d&#8217;obtenir] des identit\u00e9s musulmanes, des noms musulmans. [Ils ont d\u00fb]se convertir d&#8217;une mani\u00e8re ou d&#8217;une autre et accepter [le proph\u00e8te] Mahomet.<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Hovsep Yemenidjian<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Fuite en \u00c9gypte<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">La famille restera encore 10 ans en Turquie avant d&#8217;aller rejoindre en \u00c9gypte d&#8217;autres survivants du g\u00e9nocide, ainsi que les milliers d&#8217;orphelins arm\u00e9niens pris en charge par les anciennes communaut\u00e9s chr\u00e9tiennes du Proche-Orient.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">C&#8217;est \u00e0 Alexandrie que Knar, dont le nom de jeune fille est Bohdjelian, \u00e9pouse en 1943 Jean Yemenidjian. Elle aura trois enfants. Sa fille meurt en bas \u00e2ge, mais ses deux gar\u00e7ons survivent.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">En 1956, la crise du canal de Suez vient perturber le fragile \u00e9quilibre de la minorit\u00e9 arm\u00e9nienne d&#8217;\u00c9gypte, raconte Hovsep Yemenidjian.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00ab Ce n&#8217;\u00e9tait pas une question de religion, mais plut\u00f4t de nationalisme arabe. Apr\u00e8s la crise du canal de Suez, tous les Europ\u00e9ens, et \u00e7a comprenait les Arm\u00e9niens, \u00e9taient per\u00e7us comme des ennemis, des \u00e9trangers qu&#8217;on appelait ajnabi. La communaut\u00e9 a commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 partir et, en 10 ans, presque tous les Arm\u00e9niens \u00e9taient partis \u00bb, dit Hovsep Yemenidjian.<br \/>\n<strong><br \/>\nL&#8217;Expo 67<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Hovsep partira d&#8217;\u00c9gypte le premier, suivi par son fr\u00e8re. Knar vient leur rendre visite pendant l&#8217;Exposition universelle de 1967. Elle tombe sous le charme de Montr\u00e9al. Ses deux fils vont devoir la parrainer, car elle a alors d\u00e9j\u00e0 pr\u00e8s de 60 ans.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Hovsep Yemenidjian aurait souhait\u00e9 que la Turquie reconnaisse sa part de responsabilit\u00e9 dans le g\u00e9nocide arm\u00e9nien avant la mort de sa m\u00e8re. Une vingtaine de pays, dont le Canada, reconnaissent que le massacre de 1 million de chr\u00e9tiens arm\u00e9niens lors de la Premi\u00e8re Guerre mondiale \u00e9tait un g\u00e9nocide.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">De son c\u00f4t\u00e9, l&#8217;ambassadeur de l&#8217;Arm\u00e9nie au Canada, Armen Yeganian, dit que la vieille dame \u00e9tait un symbole pour la diaspora arm\u00e9nienne.
