Ottawa \u2013 January 19, 2017 marks the 10th anniversary of the assassination of prominent Turkish-Armenian Journalist and editor-in-chief of the bilingual Agos Newspaper, Hrant Dink. <\/p>\n

Dink was assassinated on January 19, 2007, in front of his newspaper\u2019s office in Istanbul, triggering an unprecedented surge of solidarity and pro-democracy activism in Turkey after more than 100,000 people attended his funeral. Hrant Dink\u2019s assassination is now memorialized in the Canadian Museum for Human Rights in Winnipeg.<\/p>\n

In 2005, After the Turkish governments introduction of Article 301 of the state penal code, Dink was convicted for insulting \u201cTurkishness\u201d and received numerous death threats and warnings from law enforcement authorities in Istanbul, ultimately leading to his assassination that to this day remains largely unpunished.<\/p>\n

Throughout his lifelong activism as a career journalist and an outspoken human rights defender, Dink wrote and spoke vigorously against Turkey\u2019s denial of the Armenian Genocide and the sociopolitical injustice faced by minority groups in Turkey. He was especially well known for his tireless efforts to establish dialogue between the Turkish and Armenian people, paving the way for a true and just reconciliation.<\/p>\n

Despite the emergence of a strong solidarity movement following Dink\u2019s assassination, targeted discrimination and overt policies of suppressing the fundamental rights of Armenians and other minority groups continues to trump the virtues of respect, tolerance and intercultural dialogue in Turkey. The most recent and unsettling example of such state-sponsored policy took place on January 13, 2017, when Turkish-Armenian parliamentarian and member of the People\u2019s Democratic Party (HDP), Garo Paylan, was suspended from the next three sessions of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey. Paylan has been suspended for having spoken the truth about the Armenian Genocide, the very same cause that Hrant Dink sacrificed his life for.<\/p>\n

Today, Dink has become an exemplary icon of freedom and human rights activism in Turkey and across Europe. While Turkey continues to relentlessly jail journalists and contain the fundamental freedoms of speech, association and mobility, Dink\u2019s memory serves as constant a reminder for intellectuals, activists and the wider public to challenge prejudice and intolerant nationalism.<\/p>\n

During the upcoming week, commemorative events paying tribute to Dink\u2019s legacy will be held in Toronto, Montreal and other Canadian cities. All events will be featuring Mr. Cem Ozdemir as keynote speaker. Mr. Ozdemir is a German parliamentarian of Turkish descent and the current co-chair of the German Greens Alliance Party. Throughout his political career, Mr. Ozdemir has been a strong voice in Europe, advocating for truth and justice and vehemently opposing intolerance and prejudice. Mr. Ozdemir was also the leading force behind Germany\u2019s 2016 Bundestag resolution, officially recognizing the Armenian Genocide of 1915-1923.<\/p>\n

Ottawa \u2013 Le 19 janvier 2017 marquera le 10e anniversaire de l\u2019assassinat de Hrant Dink, journaliste et r\u00e9dacteur en chef du journal bilingue turco-arm\u00e9nien Agos.<\/p>\n

Dink a \u00e9t\u00e9 assassin\u00e9 le 19 janvier 2007 devant les bureaux du journal \u00e0 Istanbul, soulevant une vague d\u2019indignation contre l\u2019attentat \u00e0 l\u2019int\u00e9rieur du pays, ainsi qu\u2019\u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9tranger. Cet attentat a provoqu\u00e9 aussi une intensification du mouvement de protestation et de l\u2019activisme pro-d\u00e9mocratique qui s\u2019est traduite par la participation de plus de cent milles personnes aux fun\u00e9railles de M.Dink. L\u2019assassinat de Hrant Dink est maintenant comm\u00e9mor\u00e9 au Mus\u00e9e canadien pour les droits de la personne \u00e0 Winnipeg.<\/p>\n

Dans les ann\u00e9es pr\u00e9c\u00e9dant l\u2019attentat, en 2005, apr\u00e8s l\u2019introduction de l\u2019article 301 du Code p\u00e9nal par le gouvernement turc, M. Dink avait \u00e9t\u00e9 condamn\u00e9 pour avoir d\u00e9nigr\u00e9 l\u2019identit\u00e9 turque et avait re\u00e7u de nombreuses menaces de mort, ce qui a ultimement men\u00e9 \u00e0 son assassinat qui demeure \u00e0 ce jour en grande partie impuni.<\/p>\n

Tout au long de sa vie d\u2019activisme en tant que journaliste de carri\u00e8re et de v\u00e9h\u00e9ment militant pour les droits de la personne, M. Dink a \u00e9crit et parl\u00e9 vigoureusement du d\u00e9ni de la Turquie du g\u00e9nocide arm\u00e9nien et de l\u2019injustice sociopolitique envers des groupes minoritaires en Turquie. Il \u00e9tait particuli\u00e8rement reconnu pour ses efforts infatigables pour \u00e9tablir un dialogue entre les Turcs et les Arm\u00e9niens afin d\u2019ouvrir la voie \u00e0 une juste et v\u00e9ritable r\u00e9conciliation.<\/p>\n

Apr\u00e8s l\u2019assassinat de M. Dink, et malgr\u00e9 l\u2019\u00e9mergence d\u2019un mouvement de solidarit\u00e9 fervent pour la d\u00e9mocratisation de la Turquie, la discrimination cibl\u00e9e et les politiques ouvertes de r\u00e9pression des droits fondamentaux des citoyens en Turquie restent tr\u00e8s pr\u00e9occupantes. L\u2019exemple le plus r\u00e9cent et inqui\u00e9tant d\u2019une telle politique parrain\u00e9e par l\u2019\u00c9tat est a \u00e9t\u00e9 la suspension en date de 13 janvier, 2017 du parlementaire Garo Paylan, (arm\u00e9nien turc repr\u00e9sentant le Parti d\u00e9mocratique des peuples HDP), des trois prochaines sessions de la Grande Assembl\u00e9e nationale de Turquie. Paylan a \u00e9t\u00e9 suspendu pour avoir prononc\u00e9 le mot g\u00e9nocide durant une session parlementaire, ce que Hrant Dink avait os\u00e9 faire publiquement avant lui, sacrifiant sa vie \u00e0 la proclamation de la v\u00e9rit\u00e9.<\/p>\n

Aujourd\u2019hui, M. Dink est devenu un symbole de libert\u00e9 et d\u2019activisme des droits de la personne en Turquie et dans l\u2019ensemble de l\u2019Europe. Alors que la Turquie continue d\u2019emprisonner sans r\u00e9pit les journalistes et de contr\u00f4ler les libert\u00e9s fondamentales d\u2019expression, d\u2019association et de mobilit\u00e9, la m\u00e9moire de M. Dink sert \u00e0 rappeler aux intellectuels, aux activistes et au grand public l\u2019importance de combattre les pr\u00e9jug\u00e9s et le racisme.<\/p>\n

Au cours des prochaines semaines, des \u00e9v\u00e9nements comm\u00e9moratifs auront lieu \u00e0 Toronto et \u00e0 Montr\u00e9al pour rendre hommage \u00e0 l\u2019h\u00e9ritage de M. Dink. Tous ces \u00e9v\u00e9nements auront pour principal conf\u00e9rencier M. Cem \u00d6zdemir. M. \u00d6zdemir, d\u2019origine turque, est d\u00e9put\u00e9 au Bundestag et il est actuellement copr\u00e9sident du parti de l\u2019Alliance des Verts en Allemagne. Tout au long de sa carri\u00e8re politique, M. \u00d6zdemir a \u00e9t\u00e9 un grand d\u00e9fenseur europ\u00e9en de la v\u00e9rit\u00e9 et de la justice et s\u2019est vivement oppos\u00e9 aux intol\u00e9rances et aux pr\u00e9jug\u00e9s.
