(AJF Garegin Njdeh Nederland) Op woensdag 7 december 2016 hebben leden van de Armeense gemeenschap in Nederland een bezoek gebracht aan het Europees Parlement in Brussel. Hierbij waren leden van meerdere Armeense organisatie aanwezig, zoals de Armeense Jongeren Federatie Garegin Njdeh, het Nederlands Armeens Comit\u00e9 voor Rechtvaardigheid en Democratie<\/a> (Hay Tad), Ani Culturele vereniging Dordrecht, Homenetmen Almelo, Homenetmen Arnhem en Homenetmen Alkmaar. Dit bezoek was georganiseerd om meer te weten te komen over de werkzaamheden van het Parlement, dat als spreekbuis van de burgers van de Europese Unie dient, en over de invloed die het heeft binnen Europa en daar buiten. Naast de introductie en een bezoek aan de plenaire vergaderzaal, heeft ook een ontmoeting plaatsgevonden met PvdA Europarlementari\u00ebr mevr. Kati Piri.<\/p>\n

Mevrouw Piri is sinds 2014 Europarlementari\u00ebr en is binnen het Parlement lid van de buitenlandcommissie, de subcommissie mensenrechten en de commissie burgerlijke vrijheden, justitie en binnenlandse zaken. Daarnaast is zij Turkije-rapporteur en in die hoedanigheid rapporteert ze omtrent de vorderingen aangaande deze onderwerpen in Turkije.
\nMevrouw Piri heeft zich aan de groep voorgesteld en uitleg gegeven over haar werk en taken binnen het Europees Parlement. Vervolgens heeft ze vragen, die veelal betrekking hadden op haar werk als Turkije-rapporteur, vanuit de groep beantwoord.
\n\"\"Volgens mevr. Piri is erkenning van de Armeense genocide door Turkije geen voorwaarde voor toetreding tot de EU. Piri is van mening dat indien Turkije ooit aan alle andere voorwaarden zal voordoen, zij zich niet kan voorstellen dat Turkije dan nog steeds de Armeense genocide zal ontkennen. Volgens haar zou de erkenning van de Armeense genocide een logische gevolg zijn, wanneer Turkije alle andere voorwaarden zou complementeren. In haar rapporten schrijft ze wel het offici\u00eble standpunt van het Europees Parlement, namelijk dat in 1915 sprake is geweest van een genocide op de Armeni\u00ebrs. Turkije leest hierin een voorwaarde tot toetreding, die volgens Piri echt niet bestaat.
\nMevrouw Piri gaf aan graag bereid te zijn om meer informatie te ontvangen over Armeni\u00ebrs die honderd jaar geleden in Turkije gedwongen werden zicht tot de Islam te bekeren om in leven te mogen blijven. Deze groep wordt ook wel de \u201cvergeten Armeni\u00ebrs\u201d genoemd. De nakomelingen van die mensen ondervinden tot de dag van vandaag moeilijkheden, doordat ze worden gediscrimineerd en daardoor niet uit durven te komen voor hun identiteit.
\nMevrouw Piri is voor haar werk bij het Nederlands Instituut voor Meerpartijendemocratie (NIMD) vaak in Armeni\u00eb geweest. Ze vindt het een mooi land en het is haar wens om Armeni\u00eb in de toekomst opnieuw te bezoeken.
