Myriam Zaki: “We worked with different countries and organizations, but only Armenia has praised our work”

(hayernaysor.am) On July 18, members of the staff of the RA Ministry of Diaspora watched the first Arab-language documentary film devoted to the Armenian Genocide called “Who Killed the Armenians?” by Egyptian TV journalists Muhammad Hanafi and Myriam Zaki.

The film presents photos of and archival materials devoted to the first genocide of the 20th century, that is, the Armenian Genocide, as well as the opinions of genocide scholars, state figures and clergymen. The shootings were held in Armenia, Egypt and Lebanon.

Greeting the film directors, the Minister stated that the film “Who Killed the Armenians?” was being shown on the sidelines of the Golden Apricot International Film Festival and said it was worth mentioning that the topic of the Armenian Genocide had sparked the interest of the Egyptian TV journalists. The Minister also appreciated the filmmakers’ large-scale efforts, their in-depth and comprehensive study of the issue and praised the film that presents the historical truth to the Arab World.

“I believe the greatest appreciation of your film in Armenia was the award that the President of the Republic of Armenia granted to you for your notable contribution to recognition of the Armenian Genocide, and you, as the best friends of the Armenian nation, deserve that appreciation,” the Minister added.

The Minister also expressed gratitude to representative of the Armenian National Committee of Egypt Armen Mazloumian and the Armenian community for organizing the visits of the journalists to Armenia. Hranush Hakobyan attached importance to this initiative, which will further deepen the relations between Egypt and Armenia and contribute to the development of relations between the two countries.

Attaching importance to the journalists’ contributions to raising the Arab World’s awareness about the Armenian Genocide, the Minister of Diaspora awarded them with the Gold Medal, which is the highest award of the RA Ministry of Diaspora.

Expressing gratitude for the cordial reception and for the high award, Muhammad Hanafi stated that Armenia had become close to their hearts and that each visit helps them get to know the Armenian people better and have a deeper understanding of Armenian culture. Hanafi said the Armenians of Egypt motivated them to make the film and added that the Armenians in Egypt have a great magnetic force and a great influence and have made great contributions to different spheres of life in Egypt. Hanafi also stated that the film had been shown in Egypt and was well received and voiced hope that it would be accessible to all Arabs and the main addressee.

Myriam Zaki also expressed gratitude for the high award and said it was both pleasant and binding at the same time. She stated that it was the first time that the entire history of the Armenian Genocide was presented to the Arab audience through a film. “The history needs to be revealed. It needs to be talked about comprehensively, not by stating cases and events. We worked with different countries and organizations, but only Armenia has praised our work. I am very happy and proud,” Zaki added.

Afterwards, the film’s directors answered questions from the employees of the RA Ministry of Diaspora.
