GLENDALE—The Armenian National Committee of America – Glendale announced its endorsement of Vartan Gharpetian for the Glendale City Council.
Gharpetian and four other candidates are vying for the remaining term of the City Council seat vacated by Rafi Manoukian who was elected City Treasurer in April 2013. The Special City Council election is scheduled for June 3, 2014.
“Vartan Gharpetian’s stance on issues of concern to Glendale residents, excellent record of community service, and leadership skills convinced us that he is the better choice to fill Councilman Manoukian’s term on the Council,” stated ANCA-Glendale Chairman Berdj Karapetian.
Gharpetian wants the transfer of funds from the Glendale Water and Power to be in compliance with the City’s Charter. Gharpetian would promote the expansion of affordable and senior housing. He is opposed to the utility rate increases adopted by the City Council in the past two years. Gharpetian wants the City to improve its outreach to segments of the population not adequately represented on the City’s workforce.
“I am honored to be endorsed by the ANCA – Glendale. This endorsement is a great boost to my campaign. I pledge to do everything within my means to be a positive influence on making Glendale an even better place to live, learn, and work,” stated Gharpetian who resides in North Glendale’s Verdugo Woodlands neighborhood.
“Vartan Gharpetian’s priorities in the areas of public and traffic safety, city infrastructure and services, residential neighborhoods, City Budget, and growth reflect the views articulated by the majority of residents in two recent surveys commissioned by the City Council,” explained ANCA-Glendale Executive Director Talar Malakian.
Gharpetian has served on 3 different City Commissions since 2004. He is a member of the Historic Preservations Commission and was a member on the Commission on Community Parks and Recreation from 2011 to 2013. He was a member of the Design Review Board from 2004 to 2008, and chaired the commission for two years.
Gharpetian is the Vice President of the Davidian and Mariamian Educational Foundation, a former member of the Glendale Adventist Medical Center Foundation Board, and a Vice-President of the California Armenian American Democrats. He has coached American Youth Soccer Organization teams since 2005.
“Mr. Gharpetian’s 28 years of experience in the private sector and leadership in businesses with a sizeable number of employees have prepared him to make crucial decisions on the governing body of our City,” added ANCA-Glendale Board member Hilma Balayan.
‘We were impressed by Mr. Gharpetian’s efforts to increase awareness about the Armenian Genocide and ability to collaborate with English, Armenian, Spanish, Korean, and Filipino speaking residents of our City,” remarked Karapetian.
Five candidates are competing to fill the remaining 10 months of the City Council seat vacated by Rafi Manoukian when he was elected as City Treasurer in April 2013. The City Council appointed former Mayor Frank Quintero to fill the position until an election would be scheduled.
The ANCA-Glendale based its decision after evaluating the candidates’ responses to the ANCA-Glendale questionnaire and assessing the candidates’ record on issues of concern to the Armenian and non-Armenian residents of the City.
“While we believe Mr. Rick Barnes, Mrs. Paula Devine, and Mr. Mike Mohill have been instrumental in making Glendale a better City and would bring a valuable point of view on the City Council, we have concluded that Mr. Vartan Gharpetian is a better choice for supporters of the ANCA-Glendale,” added Malakian.
Vartan Gharpetian, Dr. Armine Gharpetian, and their three daughters reside in the Verdugo Woodlands area of the City. Dr. Gharpetian is a member of the Glendale Unified School District Board of Education.
ANCA-Glendale advocates for the social, economic, cultural, and political rights of the city’s Armenian American community and promotes increased civic participation at the grassroots and public policy levels.

Վարդան Ղարպետյանը 2004 թվականից ի վեր աշխատել է Գլեյնդելի 3 տարբեր քաղաքային հանձնաժողովներում` եղել է Պատմական արգելոցների հանձնաժողովի, ապա Համայնքի զբոսայգիների և հանգստի գոտիների հարցերով հանձնաժողովի անդամ: 2004 -2008 – ը եղել է Քաղաքի նախագծման վերանայման խորհրդի անդամ և երկու տարի նախագահել հանձնաժողովը:
